Sept 14 Day 3
Sept 14 Day 3
Huron OH
70 mile
Some pictures from yesterday as I had bad WiFi.
A shorted day today that was a nice break gives me time to relax and reflect on how lucky I am to be on this trip.
Breakfast was interesting as there was not a lot of variety at the buffet and people there were still in PJs. The PJ kind put me off as they were showing more than I wanted to see and some stuff once seen can not be unseen.
The scenery today was also different slightly more towns and small cities. Still very country with some big old farm houses. The towns all has the same architectural as old farm homes. They also a lot of just old small 1920-1960 homes too. Not a lot of new building here as they have not grown much industry.
We passed though the town of Elmore was platted in 1851 and is located on sallow river where the boatmen had to portage in the 1700s. It was home to the Elmore automotive company until GM brought them. The beryllium plant located near by played a big role in the Nuclear power industry. HWY 20 and the toll road both bypassed the town and it is currently just hanging in as a bedroom community for Toledo.
Fremont is not quite as pretty and is also an old transportation hub that is still hanging in there. It was named after Fremont the explorer and one time president candidate. Originally an Native American village then a fort during the war of 1812 (lots of small forts along this area as the British controlled the waters of Lake Erie. It was also the home of Hayes and has his home as well as presidential library located in it.
We ended in Huron which is on the outlet of the Huron River into Lake Erie. It started out as a fur trading post and then became a transportation and shipping port. From late 1800s to 1986 a lot of coal and iron was shipped through the port to mills in Pittsburgh and other locations. Now it know for it beaches and recreation.
We arrived early and walked out to local lighthouse and pass the boat harbor. To be honest it brought all the memories of the Great Loop trip and JUST DO IT trip. I must admit I did enjoy that trip and still miss the boat a little bit.
