Sept 15
Day 4
Mentor
Total miles 83
After a slightly slow start due to oversleeping we were off on a challenging ride today.
Outside of Huron we were on the same country like roads with the standard soy and corn fields. The scenery changes as got closer and closer to Cleveland. It started with nice country homes on both sides of the road with some farms behind. Then it became full on city with both good and bad parts.
The first stop was at Vermillion River Reservation and mill hollow. It is a big cannon with small creek that locals do canoeing on.
Just past there just before Amherst there is museum to John Langston. This man founded several black schools and was the first African American elected to congress in 1890. So that important information to follow and see.
On the outskirts of Cleveland the neighborhood looked like when the mills, refinery and or docks were working it was standard upper middle class area. Today a lot of the homes could use some paint and upkeep to come back to their prime condition. We then crossed over Hwy 20 and it was all new construction and really nice historic homes. All in less than a 1 mile distance.
Then came the challenge of crossing though Cleveland City it was tough going lots of turns and traffic and not great roads. We turned off bicycle route and that helped a little but still a hard ride.
Some how I decide our reservations were at the Best Western in Mentor but no it was in Super 8. However the Super 8 somehow did not get the reservation and checked in anyways. I checked with the reservation department of Super 8 they had it. So I made sure we would not be double charged and everything worked out.
After completing the unpacking Di and I took off to see President James Garfield’s Home. It is a free tour with 90% of the stuff in the home as he left it at the time. I was quite interesting to hear about his life and death. For example I did not his role in the Civil war or the fact that he defeated to be nominated to become president.
Ribs for dinner and then to bed.
