Sept 16 Day 5
Sept 16 Day 5
Miles 101
Erie PA
Took a scenic ride and increased the milage to see great views of Lake Erie. This route followed parallel to I90 and passed though some summer Vacation towns. Although showing their age the towns clearly were busy during the summer but right now empty.
We also passed right in front of Kent State University. I was surprised there was no historic marker.
There was an historic marker that told me that Pennsylvania did not always have claim to the any Lake Erie Ports. They bought the rights in 1792 for $150,000.
After did get back on the route more traveled we stopped for a root beer float and sweet potato fries it was a good break. The site was an old fashion ice cream stand they played music from the 60 and 70s, when music was still great.
Most of the ride was in what in I describe as almost city or small town. In Geneva we passed right by a lot of Wineries and as this is harvest time they have a grape juice festival.
Arrived at the Hotel early and they would not check us in so took a ride out to Pesque Isle State Park and toured a Light house. This site had a light house in it from 1880s continuously working. It was a tough job but the keeper got a to live in a nice house and was paid $528. Tower was. only 60 feet and the light projected 16 miles into Lake Erie. Just over half way to Canada.
