Sept 22 Day 10
Sept 21
Day 10
Oswego NY
Miles 67
Last night after dinner we took off to see the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. It was funny but not as good as the original.
No real problems today. Started route out of Rochester using driving instructions but switched to Bicycle as I did not agree that what google considers non-highway and what I consider a Highway is. But it turned out great. We road through rolling country with lots of trees and nice homes. Seem like the route was mainly old Country homes or currently country houses for people working elsewhere. We after Rochester we passed through Union, Sodus, Wilcolt and Sterling before arriving in Oswego NY.
The hotels rates in Oswego were excessive so we took a room at the Knights Inn. No breakfast but a Dunkin Donuts next door should not cost the $100 difference. The fruit stands and u-pick places were swamped today, and we saw a college level baseball game and a Tennis tournament so that plus the last day of summer are the reasons for all the demand.
The ride was fast so we arrived early and stopped at the Old Fort Ontario. It was first build in 1755 to defend the British fur trade up the Mohawk river. The french burnt it to the ground under Malcolm in 1756 defending their claim to Lakes furs in Fort Niagara,. British rebuild in 1760? and it was burnt again by french and Indians. Then in 1790 it was rebuild for the war of Independence. The American gained it after the war for Independence and left it to rot. The occupied in the war of 1812 and then left it again. In 1860 the USA came back during the civil war and build the current fort as it stands. This area was used through Civil war and the two world wars. It also provided a Safe Refugee during WW2 for mainly jews from Germany, and training center and hospital for soldiers.
After that tour we toured the maritime museum learning how rough Lake Ontario can become. Also it explains the importance of the area in trade history and lake history for transportation.
