Day 14

Lake George

Miles 110

When it was not raining today it just cold, when raining it REALLY cold and wet.  But the ride went well we basically followed Hwy 22 south to the Town of St. George.

First in Burlington we stayed in Semi Hostel, meaning shared bath but private room.  It was OK , clean and neat but bare bones.  Sleep was a little weird first the fire department arrived as the smoke detector in the half of the building started to beep, then the couple upstairs became active, moved around a lot and noisy around 3 am, finally at 5 rain started to fall heavily.  We checked to see if there was a window and there was so off we went.  Only some light drizzle so it was bad not horrible.

There was lots to see today.

Burlington had scarecrow displays and this spread out past town

Then Mansion of Dor Stone a War of Independence hero and state judge among other stuff

Short stop at Fort Federic to the french Crown Point for the British

This fort was build in 1737 and housed the french for raids against British settlement.  This aggravated the British and they took the fort after several try in 1759.  Then Americans captured in war of Independence and it is now ruins only with some trenches and foundations showing.

Long stop at Fort Ticonderoga

Long history here as it was site of many battles and history.

Build by the French in 1735 note this was to stop the British from moving north into French trading and settlements on Lake Champlain.  Then attacked in 1758 and Malcolm kicked the British butts out at the start of Indian French wars.  In 1759 the British returned and won the fort by taking higher ground.  The Brits occupied the fort until the war of Independence and Ethan Allan and Green Mountain men captured the fort for the US.  It was used as starting point for US invasions of French Canada during the war of Independence and war of 1812.  Just south of Ticonderoga was where the British loss a big battle with Green and others.  That loss brought French allies into the war with the US and rest every American should know.
