Day 20
Pittsburg
Miles 91
Another day more rain and to make it even more fun of fog. The ride took us over the Alleghany Mountain climbing up to 3000 ft. The mountains are known for coal and timber in 1800 they had multiple blast furnaces.
We rode across the portage railroad site. It was build in the 1830 and was operated by ropes and wire with animal pulls up and down the rises. Boats were loaded on flat cars hauled over the divide for the Susquehanna River and Ohio River. So we are now on the part of the country that drains towards the Mississippi.
Admiral Peary was born in this area in 1856 and his home was one of the historic site. He is known as one of the first to explore the top of the Greenland glacier
Another historic site is the Lemon House build in 1830 and stood in next to plane 6 in the picture above. It served as tavern and rest stop during the life.
