Day 21

Wheeling West Virginia

Miles 89

The morning was very cloudy and it looked like rain but to our surprise no rain was falling although the scooters were very wet.  Loaded up and after gassing up attacked Pittsburg.  We had at least 4 long steep climbs in Pittsburgh.  Once we finally reached Hwy 50 things started to improve.  The celebration of ndo more climbs was short lived 50 turned into a winding rural road with lots more climbs although only 2 more really long ones.  But it was a good road to be on as the traffic light.  Then we rode south on 2 and crossed from West Virginia into Ohio and picked up some long narrow back roads leading north with another 4 really tough climbs.  One down was so steep even I worked the brakes going down hill.  Then a road closure required back tracking and more searching for a way to Fort Steuben.  After the fort we ran north to cross the river and pick Hwy 2 south and followed the Ohio into Wheeling.  We stayed at the Casino here which we did once before when we paddled part of the Ohio.

Fort Steeubin was named after the German drill trainer that helped the American forces in the War of Independence.  It was build in 1786 to house and protect the surveyors from Native American attacks.  Although occupied for only a year it became a historic location as it helped to create the Northwest territories.  The lands surveyed was to be used for grants and as payments to the soldiers that fought in the war.

As stated above there were a lot of steep curving roads that slowed us a lot.  Therefore it should not surprise anyone that today was the first day that cars actually beeped at us.  I tried to give them room to pas but there really was not a spot to pull over and it was on a bicycle route so not sure what they expected of us.

The scenery was either old city, country homes or woods and was kind of pretty.
