Day 23
Springfield OH
100 miles
We had a good start this morning lots of sun and although the temperature was only 53 I tried it without a coat for the first time in last week. I was a little chilly starting out but warmed up quickly. The day stayed warm so it was good decision.
Below is picture of the Port house in Zaneville on the canal system for taxing goods.
Stopped for gas when we arrived in Columbus and a young man asked how far we had rode the bike. We told him he was interested s I gave him a ride card. On most. trips I would have given away 30 cards by now but on this trip I have given away about 8 total during the ride.
Two problems today. In Downtown Columbus they were closing roads in preparation for some event. This rerouted us all over downtown before finding our way around all. the closures and back to the route, The next problem was Dianne’s phone, she stopped and told me it was not charging. This is normal. the connection can shake lose sometimes. However this time the spare battery was dead. I give her my spare battery and it was dead in less than 1 hour later. Now she is worried the same thing will happen tomorrow. That could be a real problem if both batteries die and her and my phone die also. I have told her to use my backup phone for the ride and see what happens to her phone I am not sure she is happy with that arrangement but it is the best plan given the problem today. I rode during the afternoon with the dead reconning to save power on my main map system. Turning the map only close to turns and turning it off after getting the next distance fixed in my head.
The route took us along route 40 west the whole way. This road is very straight here with only rolling hills. As it next to I70 and has many small towns on it that slows down traffic it is lightly used. This lets us fly along at full speed for us often not needing to slow for the towns as that is still full speed for us. The road was build in 1800 and improved in 1914 for cars. Below in a monument erected for road improvements in 1914.
After arriving in Springfield we went out sightseeing. The first stop was at Hartman Stone Garden. The story here was a man born in 1888 worked until 1938 and was retired. So he started to build small Stone garden displays. Did he ever build more than 250 different displays in 9 years. They now leave it open to the public and maintain it as garden for the locals to see.
