Day 24

Back Home in Indiana

miles 132

The boss wanted to get home a day early and I can understand why so I agreed.  We therefore started early and had the scooters fired up and roaring (purring is a more accurate description) down the road at 8:15 a full hour before normally on the road.  The route hid only light traffic and they were for the most part polite in their passing.  Only one really scared me and required to slow to stop so he had space to come back into the lane before oncoming traffic hit him.

Although it was sunny all day it was chilly not sure the temperature exceeded 70 so I wore a jacket all day.  Once home I unpacked the bikes the only apparent non-visible problem were the Jackets and mitts (for cold weather) in the water proof bag on the back of Dianne bike.  Apparently the bag would breath a little bit and mitts became damp and a little mildewy.  A quick trip though the drier solve the problem and they are now sweet smelling again.  (or as close to sweet smelling as 15 year old AT trail hiking mitts can become). Aside from that there were no problems.

Dianne’s phone did not suck the battery dead today so the conclusion is her flash light was on.

I really enjoyed the mountains in upstate New York and Pennsylvania.  I also loved the history east of the thousand Islands.  The thousand Islands and St. Lawrence river brought back memories of growing up in Gananoqua Ontario.  But honestly no part of the trip was a disappointment.  Garfields home in Ohio was a pleasant surprise and peace house at Nigeria are also well worth the trip.

The only disappointment was the ticket for not having a helmet.  But as the saying goes, “One man’s scooter/mini-bike is a police officer motorized vehicle!”  The good news it regardless it won’t cost us any point but might have a fine.  Dianne has already prepared the plea of guilty and will write the explanation in the morning.

Of surprising things

  • Lack of trash on the roads (they really are pretty clean
  • Lack of Political signs.  In 2016 and 2020 there were signage everywhere and counts were in the 50-100 for less distance than we traveled per day.
  • Effect of colleges on room availability during week ends
  • The number and size of the churches in the eastern parts of the USA and in towns
  • The amount of money spend on high school football and baseball fields
  • How well historic sites are marked in New York and Pennsylvania and the number of sites
  • The fact that large parts of the countryside is still locked in the late 50s and where the Amish are in the 1800s
  • How bad the roads are in the large cities and how the pattern go when passing though.  (country homes, nice suburbs, run down old wealthy suburbs (usually around abandoned factories), really nice downtowns then reverse of incoming).

Well till next trip

Thanks and love to all

Allan

  1. To coin a phrase " Diane and Al's Excellent Adventure".

Time to put your feet up and relax in front of the tv watching the election chaos about to happen.
