Oct 5 Day 24 Back Home in Indiana miles 132 The boss wanted to get home a day early and I can understand why so I agreed.   We therefore started early and had the scooters fired up and roaring (purring is a more accurate description) down the road at 8:15 a full hour before normally on the road.   The route hid only light traffic and they were for the most part polite in their passing.   Only one really scared me and required to slow to stop so he had space to come back into the lane before oncoming traffic hit him.   Although it was sunny all day it was chilly not sure the temperature exceeded 70 so I wore a jacket all day.   Once home I unpacked the bikes the only apparent non-visible problem were the Jackets and mitts (for cold weather) in the water proof bag on the back of Dianne bike.   Apparently the bag would breath a little bit and mitts became damp and a little mildewy.   A quick trip though the drier solve the problem and they are now sweet s...

Oct 5 Day 23 Springfield OH 100 miles We had a good start this morning lots of sun and although the temperature was only 53 I tried it without a coat for the first time in last week.   I was a little chilly starting out but warmed up quickly.   The day stayed warm so it was good decision. Below is picture of the Port house in Zaneville on the canal system for taxing goods. Stopped for gas when we arrived in Columbus and a young man asked how far we had rode the bike.   We told him he was interested s I gave him a ride card.   On most. trips I would have given away 30 cards by now but on this trip I have given away about 8 total during the ride.   Two problems today.   In Downtown Columbus they were closing roads in preparation for some event.   This rerouted us all over downtown before finding our way around all. the closures and back to the route,   The next problem was Dianne’s phone, she stopped and told me it was not charging.   This is n...

Oct 3   Day 22 Miles 90 Zaneville OH Well woke and Dianne was still short the money she put into the slots last night so that part was not a dream.   Left in a light fog and climbed out of the Ohio River valley and during that time we had a ton of switchbacks and some exciting down hills.   The area was very scenic as the road seems to follow an mountain ridge for a long ways.   It must in the fracking area as there many cleared sights with oil tanks and pressure vessels for gas and injection water.   To be honest it did not mess with the scenery too badly but did leave a few scars.   Also passed by one strip mine area and that was. not so good looking.   One town Mooreville had General Morgans confederate Calvary pass through on the morning of July 24 1863.   They stripped the town of any food or horses they find and moved on.   That afternoon General Shackleford and the union arrived in pursuit of Morgan 500 troopers.   They pas...

Oct 2 Day 21 Wheeling West Virginia   Miles 89 The morning was very cloudy and it looked like rain but to our surprise no rain was falling although the scooters were very wet.   Loaded up and after gassing up attacked Pittsburg.   We had at least 4 long steep climbs in Pittsburgh.   Once we finally reached Hwy 50 things started to improve.   The celebration of ndo more climbs was short lived 50 turned into a winding rural road with lots more climbs although only 2 more really long ones.   But it was a good road to be on as the traffic light.   Then we rode south on 2 and crossed from West Virginia into Ohio and picked up some long narrow back roads leading north with another 4 really tough climbs.   One down was so steep even I worked the brakes going down hill.   Then a road closure required back tracking and more searching for a way to Fort Steuben.   After the fort we ran north to cross the river and pick Hwy 2 south and follow...

Oct 1 Day 20 Pittsburg Miles 91   Another day more rain and to make it even more fun of fog.   The ride took us over the Alleghany Mountain climbing up to 3000 ft.   The mountains are known for coal and timber in 1800 they had multiple blast furnaces.   We rode across the portage railroad site.   It was build in the 1830 and was operated by ropes and wire with animal pulls up and down the rises.   Boats were loaded on flat cars hauled over the divide for the Susquehanna River and Ohio River.   So we are now on the part of the country that drains towards the Mississippi.   Admiral Peary was born in this area in 1856 and his home was one of the historic site.   He is known as one of the first to explore the top of the Greenland glacier Another historic site is the Lemon House   build in 1830 and stood in next to plane 6 in the picture above.   It served as tavern and rest stop during the life.   Count 1 corn field 3 histor...
